ADVERTISING POT LIDS

This is a new category for Merlin Antiques and one about which we don't know a lot except that they are ceramic! I've been told that most food and cosmetic items were packaged this way until 1910 when cheaper packaging was developed. The pot lids are transfer printed usually in black and sometimes in other colors or more than one color. The lids and pots were usually thrown away in privies and dumps after the contents were gone similar to tossing the used toothpaste tube in the waste basket. Thus, pot lids are the ephemera of the last century. Although it is nice to have a pot to go with a lid, they usually were separated when thrown away. The important item is the lid, its print and its advertising.

POT LID PARISIAN TOOTHPASTE TWO LANGUAGES This 3" pot lid is printed in both English and French with information about Atkinson's Toothpaste. Obviously, the lid was made for both the English and French markets. The lid is in excellent condition while the base has two chips, one on the bottom edge and one on the top edge. Appearance is still very good. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. The pot lid was probably made between 1880 and 1900 in England.

CARBOLIC TOOTHPASTE POT LID ART NOUVEAU 1890 This black printed pot lid has an art nouveau lily design around the word "carbolic". I wonder what carbolic has to do with toothpaste. However, the toothpaste was also good for the gums as well as the teeth. The lid was made around 1890-1900. Condition is excellent

99-2787

WOODS ARECA NUT TOOTHPASTE POT LID A 2-1/2" by 1-1/2" pot lid and base that shows that even in the late 19th century there was not much truth in advertising! The company promises removal of tartar and whitening of teeth just as toothpaste companies do today. Other than a small nick on the rim and some staining, appearance of the lid is very good. The base, which may not be the original, is in good condition.
