PRATT POT LIDS

This category is similar to advertising pot lids as Pratt lids were made to be the covers for pots containing toothpaste, shaving cream, foodstuff, etc. The difference is that advertising pot lids were intended to be utiliarian advertisements of the contents of the pot with the intention that the lid would be tossed away when the contents were used up. The Pratt lid was beautifully designed as a collectible with the intention that it be saved and valued. Many Pratt lids are found in period Victorian frames as they were placed on the walls of many homes. The colorful Victorian prints of charming country scenes, pretty children and adorable animals are still popular today.

PRATT POT LID & BASE CHARITY CIRCA 1880 Printed in many shades of blue, green brown and red, this pot lid is entitled "Charity". It is 5" in diameter. There is a repair to one edge of the lid as well as some small nicks also on the edge. Appearance is excellent. The base appears to be the one that came with the lid. The pot lid was probably made in Staffordshire around 1860-1880.

PRETTY KETTLE OF FISH PRATT POT LID A wonderful play on the expression "A pretty kettle of fish"! The dogs have been fighting and have knocked over a kettle of fish. Two of the dogs are scalded. And, both we and the dogs realize that their owners will be angry. This is an excellent scene from Victorian country life which will appeal to those of you who like animals and those of you who enjoy Victorian interiors. The condition of the face of the lid appears excellent. There is a chip under the rim and three small chip on the rim where the lid would fit in the pot. The lid dates from about 1860.

BEARS ON ROCK PRATT POT LID These are odd looking bears! They vaguely resemble wolves. But, the lid is from a series that includes different bear scenes. I assume the pot held bear grease. Other than staining on the back of the lid, condition appears to be excellent. The lid dates from around 1860.

THE SNOW DRIFT PRATT POT LID A 4-1/4" Pratt pot lid of a dog saving a sheep from freezing to death in a snow drift. The lid is beautifully printed with great attention to detail. The fur of the dog and the wool of the sheep are so realistic that you almost feel as if you could touch the animals. Other than some age crackling, the lid appears to be in excellent condition. It dates from the mid nineteenth century.

CHILDREN OF FLORA PRATT POT LID This 4-1/2" Pratt pot lid was probably made between 1860 and 1880. It is well printed in five colors and depicts a charming and sentimental Victorian scene although the little girl looks a bit too impish to suit most Victorian ideas of good little girls! The lid has the title printed on the bottom and I assume Flora is either a diety or someone's mother! Condition of the face of the lid is excellent with minor dings to where the rim would have sat in the pot. This would be a great addition to either a Victorian or pot lid collection.

FEEDING THE CHICKENS PRATT POT LID A large 4-1/4" Pratt pot lid beautifully printed in five colors of a charming Victorian scene of children and chicks. The basket of roses is a lovely touch! The condition of the print is excellent. The rim of the lid where it would have sat in the base has small nibbles and discoloration. This is one of my favorite lids and a nice addition to a pot lid or Victorian collection. The lid dates from 1860-1880. It does not come with a base.
