SATYR JUGS AND MUGS

I have always enjoyed Satyr jugs and mugs because they are so ugly! Not really. Satyrs are the mythical creatures--half man and half goat--who wined and dined with Bacchus the god of wine. All of the mugs and jugs seen here are from the early 19th century or late 18th century. They are actually quite handsome!

LARGE SATYR JUG WITH MAN HANDLE C 1820 An extraordinary 9" to the top of the handle pearlware satyr jug. This jug has many interesting details as well as much repair! Look at all of the photos and you'll see what I mean. The smiling face is well potted. Above his crown of grapes and leaves is another face which probably represents Bacchus, god of wine. On either side of the face is the head of a goat--a symbol of satyrs and Bacchus. The handle is molded in the shape of a man holding a bottle. He looks a bit tipsy as the buttons on his jacket are not buttoned correctly! The base has blue feather or shell edge painting. There is a repair--not a good one--to the base. There are also repairs to the handle and the rim--not bad. The jug looks terrific. It probably dates from the earliest part of the 19th century.

CREAMWARE SATYR MUG IN PRATT COLORS 1790 Perhaps I should have placed this 4-1/2" creamware satyr mug in the Battered Beauties category but the only things wrong with this mug is a missing handle--quite enough! Other than that, he is well molded and painted in high fire Pratt colors. Look at all of the photos as the true colors are in the last photo. The mug was probably made in Staffordshire between 1790 and 1800.

PINK LUSTRE SATYR MUG WITH FROG 1830 This well molded 5" satyr mug is covered in pink lustre and has a frog inside. Take a look at the last photo to see the frog. The face is well painted and quite nice looking. Other than some wear to the lustre, condition is excellent. It was probably made in Staffordshire between 1820 and 1830. Satyr jugs are sometimes referred to as Bacchus jugs but Bacchus didn't have horns and pointy ears and these guys do! Satyrs are always associated with Bacchus, however, who was the ancient god of wine. Thus, satyr jugs and mugs were probably used for wine.
