COW CREAMERS

This is one of my favorite categories. I love cow creamers for their charm and utility. Actually, I've been told they were never very useful as they were hard to clean and could make people sick! I try to have only early 19th century cow creamers with sweet faces and wonderful coloring. If you go to Stoke, take a look at the collection of more than 800 cow creamers of which there are always 400 on display.

SWANSEA BLACK TRANSFER COW CREAMER 1830 This Swansea (Wales) cow creamer is unusual as it is printed rather than painted. It was made in the Swansea factory, Baker, Bevins & Irwin, around 1830. It stands 5.5 inches to the top of the tail and 7 inches from the tail to the nose. The pattern is a charming rural print complete with bridge, cottage, people and dovecote. The lid is original. The tail has been glued back on and there is a hairline in the body from the bottom of the tail to the thigh. The ends of the horns are chipped. That said, the creamer displays beautifully. If you want a rare cow creamer or black tranferware item, this is the one for you!

SPONGED COW CREAMER WITH MILK MAID 1830 Cow creamers are charming pieces of folk pottery. I rather doubt they were used as creamers, as the threat of samonella would have been great! This large cow, 8" from tail to nose and 6" to the top of the tail, is sponged in black. Her horns, ears and part of her tail have been repaired. Almost all cow creamers of this age have repairs to horns, tail and ears! There are no other repairs. Even the lid, which is usually absent, looks original. The milkmaid is sitting on a stool and has a pail. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. The cow creamer was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. I have other wonderful cow creamers in this catalog.

YORKSHIRE COW CREAMER C1830 This spotted cow creamer has the sweetest smile. Take a look at all of the photos and you will see what I mean. She is decorated with black and brown spots and stands on a green and orange base. She appears to be in excellent condition but since most of these early cow creamers have repairs to their horns, lids and tails I suspect as much with this one. The creamer was probably made in Yorkshire around 1830.
