CUP PLATES

Picture

We have so many cup plates that I thought I'd make a new category. There are many theories about cup plates but they really were made as such. They were designed to protect the tea table or tea cloth when the tea drinker poured the tea into the saucer and placed the cup on the cup plate. Of course, the tea drinker drank from the saucer! Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a piece is a cup plate or a doll plate. Some patterns are known to be a part of a doll service. Somtimes, it is just guessing. Enjoy!

BLACK TRANSFER INDIAN SCENERY CUP PLATE 1835 Found on a 5 inch cup plate, this pattern is part of a series that depicts wild animals in an Indian setting. Actually, the India part is quite fanciful! The animal in the center of the plate appears to be a mongoose. I have five more of these plates. Condition of this plate is excellent. I have another item in this series in the catalog; a beaver undertray. Although this plate is not marked, it is from the "Indian Scenery" series made by William Hackwood around 1835.

RILEY FLOWERS BLUE TRANSFERWARE CUP PLATE A 3-3/4" dark blue pearlware cup plate in the popular Riley pattern known as Flowers and Vases. The cup plate is so small the the vase has been eliminated! Also, the border stringing is a bit different from the larger version. You can view a10" plate in this pattern in my catalog. Other than a very faint line on the back at one o'clock, condition is excellent. The cup plate was made in Staffordshire around 1825.

PRATTWARE PEARLWARE CUP PLATE C 1820 I couldn't decide whether to put this 4" pearlware cup plate in this category or the Prattware category. The plate is printed in blue under the glaze and painted over the glaze in high fire colors of blue, orange, brown and green. The edge of the plate is finely molded in a feather and bar design. Condition of this unusual piece is excellent. It was probably made in Staffordshire between 1810 and 1820.

97-1651

PURPLE AND WHITE PEARLWARE DOLL PLATE C 1835 Purple is less common in early doll and cup plates than blue. This 3-3/4" pearlware doll plate is crisply printed in a deep red purple with a country scene which includes a windmill. Windmills are quite common in Kent and other parts of England. The plate has the same color in a line around the edge. I wonder if the pattern is a piece of a larger print. Condition is excellent.

TRELLIS AND FLOWERS PEARLWARE DOLL PLATE 1830 This 3-1/4" pearlware doll plate is printed with a sheet pattern that I call Trellis and Flowers. I have two of these and you'll notice that the pattern is a little different on each one. Condition is excellent. The plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. What looks like scratches were wrinkles in the transfer paper.

DARK BLUE PEARLWARE FLORAL CUP PLATE 1825 This 3-3/4" dark blue floral cup plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1825. It is a piece of a floral pattern that covers a teapot that is in this catalog. If you'd like to see the entire pattern take a look at the teapot--00-2999. It is fun to see what the cutter took from the pattern to place on a small piece. The pattern is beautifully printed in a rich, dark blue. Condition is excellent.
