BLUE AND WHITE TRANSFERWARE/VARIOUS & UNUSUAL SHAPES

Picture

This category contains unusual and various shapes. Footbaths, pepper pots, pickle dishes and bidets don't quite fit into any other category. Their forms are unusual and sometimes rare. Blue and white was printed on useful as well as decorative items. I use an old blue printed toilet to which I have added a glass top as an end table.

BLUE TRANSFERWARE DRAINER VIGNETTE PATTERN Drainers were used to drain the juices from the meat or fish onto the platter. This pearlware drainer is part of the "Vignette" service that I am listing in this catalog. It is 13-1/2" by 9-1/2". The pattern has a horse and her foal surrounded by a gorgeous floral border. The series was made around 1820 in Staffordshire by John Bagster. Other than a hairline in the border, condtion is excellent. Drainers are hard to find and highly collectible. If you like drainers, this is the one for you!

99-2726
PARROT BORDER BOURDALOUE 1820 What is a bourdaloue? It is a lady's urinal. The name derives from a minister named Bourdaloue who gave wonderful but long sermons. Thus the need for a Bourdaloue! This one is printed with the Taj Mahal in a series known for its Indian views. The so-called parrot border can be seen on the inside of the rim. The bourdaloue is restored. Its appearance is very good. This is a rare and delightful ite. Most people as me if it's a gravy boat. Whatever! It was probably made in Staffordshire around 1820.

DARK BLUE PEPPER POT FLOWER BASKET 1825 This 4-1/2" pearlware pepper pot was made in Staffordshire around 1825 by either Adams or Clews. Pepper pots are fairly rare and dark blue ones are rarer still. This one is printed with a basket of flowers on one side and a vase with a chinese figure on the other. The background is a lovely stippled blue. Condition is excellent which is also quite rare for these utilitarian little items. Other than a glazed over chip under the collar and a small nick next to it, the pepper pot is nearly perfect. Even the holes in the top are in good condition. If you like rare and charming small pieces of old blue, this is the piece for you! Take a look at all four of the photos for the details.

PEARLWARE CAKE/CHEESE STAND DRAGONS 1820 A 12" diameter pearlware cake/cheese stand in a wonderful pattern of dragons and honey comb shaped scales printed in blue and outlined on the edge with ochre brown. The dragons all stand with their feet in the center of the plate. The center pattern is composed of four snakes! All of the dragons have different heads. Between their tales lie different Chinese scenes. The footed stand is 2-1/4" high. There is a glazed over chip on the outside rim, a repair to the foot (to an old crack) and a glaze pop on the leg of one of the dragons. Appearance is excellent. I love these stands as they are attractive, rare and useful. I use mine for the tradition cakes, cookies and cheeses as well as tarts and quiche. The stand was probably made in Staffordshire around 1820. Forgive the excessive flash on all of the photos!

01-3296
MINTON POTTY C1830 SMEE AND SONS BEDSIDE SEAT This amusing potty is also a lovely piece of Minton pottery dating from the 1830's. Inside it says Smee's Bedside Seat. Perhaps they were the company that commissioned the potty? I've had other pieces of this toilet set such as a soap dish and a toilet box. It is always beautifully printed which reflects Minton's high quality. It is 6" high and 10" across. Condition is okay. The potty displays well but has some mediocre repairs. If you are interested, I will go into detail. Overall, it is a rare and gorgeous piece.
