CHINOISERIE

Picture

All early transferware was influenced by Chinese design. Thus, some of the earliest transferware pieces look as if they were made in China. One of the most famous Chinoiserie patterns is the "Willow" pattern which was designed by the Spode Factory in the late 18th century and is still popular today.

07-5092A

CHINOISERIE APOTHECARY PATTERN DRAINER 1820 This pattern is known as "The Apothecary". The man at the table on the right is using a mortar and pestle and appears to be grinding medication. The pattern was altered to accommodate the hole in the drainer. Usually, the man on the left is sitting at the same table as the apothecary. He is given his own table in the drainer! Although appearance is excellent, the drainer is being sold "as is". It has been restored. There is a large crack that runs from around 11 o'clock to around 5 o'clock. The pearlware drainer is 14.75 inches by 10.5 inches. It is printed in black and colored over the glaze in orange, blue, yellow, green and pink. I have a two drainers, a small platter, four soup bowls and a plate in this pattern.

DAVENPORT CHINOISERIE BLUE TRANSFER PLATTER This 16-1/2" by 12-1/4" pearlware platter was made in Staffordshire by Davenport around 1820. It is printed in medium blue with a Chinoiserie pattern that is really more of a transitional pattern between Chinese patterns and English patterns. Although the foliage appears Chinese, the buildings and people look quite English! Other than a tiny flake at the very edge of the platter at two o'clock, condition is excellent. Take a look at all of the photos for the details.

06-4786

CHINOISERIE DAVENPORT BLUE TRANFER PLATTER This lovely blue transferware pearlware 16-1/2" by 13" platter was made by Davenport in Staffordshire around 1820. It is printed in soft blue with an unknown to me Chinoiserie scene. Other than a 2" tight hairline at 7 o'clock, that is mostly visible on the back, and a chip in the foliage under the flower at 12 o'clock, condition is excellent. It is difficult to see either flae. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. The back has an impressed Davenport mark.
Thanks to Dora Landey and Loren Zeller, I now know that the pattern name is "View of the Imperial Park at Gehol". This is an actual view rather than an imaginary one.
