HISTORICAL STAFFORDSHIRE

Picture

Transferware with scenes of early America is sometimes referred to as Historical Staffordshire or Historical Transferware. Of course, if the item has an English scene, it would still be historical!

CLEWS BLACK TRANSFERWARE NEWBURGH PLATTER Made by James and Ralph Clews in Staffordshire around 1830, this 15-1/2" by 13" platter is part of their Hudson River Views series entitled "Picturesque Views". This is a view of Newburgh, N.Y. It is wonderful to see the way this town looked in the early 1830s! Other than minor marks that can be seen only when you tilt the platter in the light, condition is excellent. Take a look at all of the photos for the details.

06-4805
PAIR ROGERS BOSTON STATE HOUSE CHARGERS 1825 A charger in early blue is rare, but a pair of historical chargers is rarer still! They are each nearly 13" in diameter, and are printed in Rogers Boston State House pattern. Although appearance is excellent, each has had minor restoration to hairlines. One has an in-the-making flaw in the inner rim at 1 o'clock. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. If you are looking for rare historical items, these are the pieces for you! The chargers were made in Staffordshire around 1825. I doubt there are still cows on Boston Common!

ROGERS BOSTON STATE HOUSE ROUND CHARGER 1825 Chargers are a fairly uncommon form in early transferware. This nearly 15" charger is even more unusual, as it is an historical pattern. It is printed with Rogers Boston State house, which was made in Staffordshire around 1825. Although appearance is excellent, there has been restoration to a hairline at about 7 o'clock. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. If you like unusual historical items, this is the piece for you! Cows on Boston Common!

06-4777
CLEWS LANDING OF LAYFAYETTE HISTORICAL PLATE This 10" pearlware plate was made by James and Ralph Clews in Staffordshire to commemorate the visit of General LaFayette to the United States in 1824. LaFayette was honored by our nation for his role in helping us win the Revolutionary War. What an irony that an English manufacturer would make a plate (actually a whole dinner service) in his honor! This particular plate is from the Ludwig sale at Freeman's Auction this past May. The collection was put away in the early '40s, and contained many rare Historical Staffordshire items. This pattern is not rare, but the condition is essentially mint. It doesn't look as if it were used at all. I wish my photographs were better, as the transfer print has good contrast. It you are looking for a wonderful piece of hishorical blue, this is the item for you!

06-4772
CLEWS BLACK TRANSFERWARE HUDSON RIVER SOUP James and Ralph Clews made a wonderful series of Hudson River views in the 1830s, which is entitled "Picturesque Views". This 10-1/4" black transferware soup bowl is printed in one of the harder to find patterns, "Nr Jessups Landing Hudson River". I have always enjoyed this series as it opens a window onto the past. Other than two chips on the footrim (back), condition is excellent, and the print is sharper than my photos. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. I have more items in this series.
