CLEWS LANDING OF LAYFAYETTE HISTORICAL PLATE This 10" pearlware plate was made by James and Ralph Clews in Staffordshire to commemorate the visit of General LaFayette to the United States in 1824. LaFayette was honored by our nation for his role in helping us win the Revolutionary War. What an irony that an English manufacturer would make a plate (actually a whole dinner service) in his honor! This particular plate is from the Ludwig sale at Freeman's Auction this past May. The collection was put away in the early '40s, and contained many rare Historical Staffordshire items. This pattern is not rare, but the condition is essentially mint. It doesn't look as if it were used at all. I wish my photographs were better, as the transfer print has good contrast. It you are looking for a wonderful piece of hishorical blue, this is the item for you!

06-4761
HERCULANEUM PEARLWARE SOUP HUNTING SCENE 1825 Another of my favorite series is a hunting series made by the Liverpool factory, Herculaneum. It is sharply printed in a rich, almost purple, blue with men, dogs, horses and game. This 10" soup has hunters and their dogs surrounded by a lush border of roses and other flowers contained by a white gadrooned edge. Sadly, the soup has some damage. There is a 4" crack at 12 o'clock with an adjacent 1-1/2" line. There are also two chips on the footrim. Appearance is still excellent. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. The crack has been stabilized, and the price reflects the damage.

06-4703
BEEMASTER PATTERN PEARLWARE SOUP 1820 The Beemaster pattern is one of my favorites. It combines an English country scene complete with dogs surrounded by an animal border. An English friend thought this might be a wedding pattern as a beehive was a traditional wedding gift. To paraphrase Jonathan Swift, a bee and thus the beehive offers both sweetness and light! Other than an in-the-making cobalt drip in the white sky, condition of the nearly 9-1/2" soup is excellent with no chips, cracks or restoration. The soup was probably made in Staffordshire around 1820. Take a look at all of the photos for the details.

BEEMASTER BLUE TRANSFERWARE PLATE 1820 This wonderful pattern was, according to an English friend, probably depicts a wedding scene. The country couple are wearing their best clothes, and a beehive was a traditional English country gift as it provides, to quote Swift, both sweetness and light. The print of this nearly 10" pearlware plate is clear and crisp. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or repairs. Take a look at all of the photos for the details.

VIGNETTE BLUE TRANSFERWARE PLATE 1820 The 9-3/4" dinner plate from the "Vignette" dinner service shares a central pattern with the cheese stand. The series, which was made by John Bagster in Staffordshire around 1820, has central patterns of rural scenes surrounded by a lush border of roses and ribbons. This scene depicts a shepherd and his sheep. I have twelve of these plates. Condition of all twelve plates is excellent. They are being sold separately.
