DR SYNTAX SELLS GRIZZLE CHILD'S PLATE 1830 The worst things about this plate are the photos! This 7" pearlware plate is printed in a reddish brown with the scene of Dr. Syntax selling his horse. The country scene includes the comic Dr. Syntax, his horse, two dogs and some businessmen. The raised border has seven different animals: a squirrel, a turkey, a ram, a swan, a goat a deer and a rooster. The are beautifully molded. Other than a stabilized hairline at seven o'clock, condition is excellent. The plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. I have a small collection of Dr. Syntax items in this catalog as he is such a charming character!

The border has different songbirds and deer. The plate is transfer printed in red with hand colored enamels in yellow, green, brown and blue. There is an "X" shaped line on the back the doesn't go through to the front. Other than that, this plate is in excellent condition. Take a look at all of the photos to see the details.

02-3603
SYNTAX TAKING HIS TOUR CHILD'S PL 1830 ???are and wonderful child's plate with Dr. Syntax. This 6-1/2" pearlware plate is entitled "Syntax Taking His Tour". The plate is printed in black and colored in purple, blue, yellow, orange, brown and green. The border is molded in an alternating band of fleurs de lis and leaves that are painted green and blue. The scene is the same as the Clews dark blue version that I have in this catalog--00-2848. Take a look as it is interesting to compare what different artists copied from the same source print. This plate and the other Dr. Syntax child's plate in this catalog are a must for the serious collector of either Dr. Syntax or children's plates. The plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. Its condition is excellent.

02-3602
DR. SYNTAX CHILD'S PL SKETCHING THE LAKE 1830 A rare pearlware 6-1/2" child's plate entitled "Syntax Sketching the Lake". The plate is printed in brown and clobbered with blue, green, orange and yellow. The border is formed of beautifully molded roses and what appear to be horns of plenty. Dr. Syntax is more commonly seen on the Ralph and James Clews dark blue series made in the 1820's. However, D. Syntax was such a popular literary character that other factories copied him onto pottery throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century. This child's plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. Its condition is excellent. The last photo is blurry but the print on the plate is not!
