This well molded 5" satyr mug is covered in pink lustre and has a frog inside. Take a look at the last photo to see the frog. The face is well painted and quite nice looking. Other than some wear to the lustre, condition is excellent. It was probably made in Staffordshire between 1820 and 1830. Satyr jugs are sometimes referred to as Bacchus jugs but Bacchus didn't have horns and pointy ears and these guys do! Satyrs are always associated with Bacchus, however, who was the ancient god of wine. Thus, satyr jugs and mugs were probably used for wine. |
