Manufacturer: Staffordshire
An extraordinary 9" to the top of the handle pearlware satyr jug. This jug has many interesting details as well as much repair! Look at all of the photos and you'll see what I mean. The smiling face is well potted. Above his crown of grapes and leaves is another face which probably represents Bacchus, god of wine. On either side of the face is the head of a goat--a symbol of satyrs and Bacchus. The handle is molded in the shape of a man holding a bottle. He looks a bit tipsy as the buttons on his jacket are not buttoned correctly! The base has blue feather or shell edge painting. There is a repair--not a good one--to the base. There are also repairs to the handle and the rim--not bad. The jug looks terrific. It probably dates from the earliest part of the 19th century. |
