A rare pearlware 6-1/2" child's plate entitled "Syntax Sketching the Lake". The plate is printed in brown and clobbered with blue, green, orange and yellow. The border is formed of beautifully molded roses and what appear to be horns of plenty. Dr. Syntax is more commonly seen on the Ralph and James Clews dark blue series made in the 1820's. However, D. Syntax was such a popular literary character that other factories copied him onto pottery throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century. This child's plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1830. Its condition is excellent. The last photo is blurry but the print on the plate is not! |
