Impressed "Wood" for Enoch Wood & Sons, this dark blue pearlware cup and saucer was made in Staffordshire around 1825. The pattern is most interesting and untitled. There is a dinner plate in this series with cupid behind bars and another dinner plate with a child wearing glasses surrounded by his toys. This does not sound like a theme! The cup and saucer are from a rarely seen tea service which has cupid behind bars on the teapot. The woman behind bars on the saucer is perhaps Psyche who was married to cupid.

| She was quite unhappy as the only thing she couldn't have in her marriage was to know who her husband was! Actually, that sounds like a lot to me! Maybe the bars are symbolic of Psyche's separation from her husband. I'd like to say "whatever" but that would be too trite. The saucer is 5-3/4"" and the cup is 3-1/4" in diameter and 2-1/2" high. There is a tiny bit of untensil wear on the saucer. The cup is in excellent condition with only a nick on the base ring which cannot be seen when the cup is on the table. Appearance of both pieces is excellent. Take a look at the photos for the details. |
