| Impressed "Wood" for Enoch Wood & Sons, this dark blue pearlware cup and saucer was made in Staffordshire around 1825. The pattern is most interesting and untitled. There is a dinner plate in this series with cupid behind bars and another dinner plate with a child wearing glasses surrounded by his toys. This does not sound like a theme! The cup and saucer are from a rarely seen tea service which has cupid behind bars on the teapot. The woman behind bars on the saucer is perhaps Psyche who was married to cupid. She was quite unhappy as the only thing she couldn't have in her marriage was to know who her husband was! Actually, that sounds like a lot to me! Maybe the bars are symbolic of Psyche's separation from her husband. I'd like to say "whatever" but that would be too trite. The saucer is 5-3/4"" and the cup is 3-1/4" in diameter and 2-1/2" high. There is a tiny bit of untensil wear on the saucer. The cup is in excellent condition with only a nick on the base ring which cannot be seen when the cup is on the table. Appearance of both pieces is excellent. Take a look at the photos for the details. |
