This 10" pearlware plate was made by James and Ralph Clews in Staffordshire to commemorate the visit of General LaFayette to the United States in 1824. LaFayette was honored by our nation for his role in helping us win the Revolutionary War. What an irony that an English manufacturer would make a plate (actually a whole dinner service) in his honor! This particular plate is from the Ludwig sale at Freeman's Auction this past May. The collection was put away in the early '40s, and contained many rare Historical Staffordshire items. This pattern is not rare, but the condition is essentially mint. It doesn't look as if it were used at all. I wish my photographs were better, as the transfer print has good contrast. It you are looking for a wonderful piece of hishorical blue, this is the item for you! |
