Enoch Wood & Sons made an interesting series of plates unified by the same border, but with very different central scenes. This 10" pearlware plate is known as the Young Philosopher. The other 10" plate is known as Cupid Behind Bars. There is also a soup bowl with a woman behind bars. There are smaller plates, but I have never seen a platter in this series. I do know there is a tea service. You can see the Cupid Behind Bars plate in this catalog. I also have another Young Philosopher plate in this catalog, but it has the molded white border. Condition of this plate is excellent. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. It was made in Staffordshire around 1825. |
