This 9-1/2" pearlware plate is printed in blue with the pattern known as Bewick Stag. The pattern is copied from the work of Thomas Bewick. The stag or red deer stands in the foreground, while three other deer are in the background. The border is unusual, as it comprises vignettes of animals. Some of these vignettes are also copied from the work of Bewick. Condition of the plate is excellent, with no chips, cracks or repairs. The plate was probably made in Staffordshire around 1820. If you are looking for a gorgeous animal print on blue pottery, this is the plate for you! |
