Manufacturer: Clews
This huge and gorgeous pearlware soup tureen and undertray were made by James and Ralph Clews in Staffordshire around 1825. There is an impressed Clews mark with a crown on the underside of the tray. The tureen is 16" from handle to handle, 12" high and 10" wide. The undertray in 15-1/2" by 12". There is a raised oval in the center of the undertray to hold the tureen. The undertray and tureen together are 14" high. The pattern is Tivoli. The ancient Tivoli ruins are outside of Rome. This was a popular pattern in the early 19th century, and it was used by other potters. Although the undertray and the tureen have always been together, the tureen is printed a bit lighter than the undertray. There is a bit of glaze wear on a highpoint on the lid. There is also a firing line on the undertray that was done in the making. It cannot be seen when the tureen is sitting on it. Condition and appearance are excellent. If you have been wanting an early blue soup tureen, this is the item for you! It can hold soup or flowers. What an excellent centerpiece! Take a look at the photos for the details. |
