| This pearlware toast water jug is nearly 9" to the top of the lid, 8-1/4" from the spout to the handle and 4-1/2" in diameter It is printed in medium to dark blue with a version of the Blue Italian pattern, made popular by Spode. This version has a floral border, and most likely was made by Stubbs. Appearance is excellent, but there are a few flaws. There is a break on the strainer on the inside of the spout, a loss of glaze on the handle, and a small in-the-making spot where the jug stuck to something when it was being fired. Burnt toast in water was used to settle the stomach. The strainer prevented the pieces of toast from getting into the liquid. The lid kept the liquid hot. Take a look at the photos for the details. The jug was probably made in Staffordshire around 1825-1830. I don't think I have ever seen such a large toast water jug! |
