11-5658

BLACK TRANSFER JUG WITH CHILDREN'S PATTERNS Jug, 8.5 inches high by 8 inches from the handle to the spout. This unusual jug has a huge lion resting near a farmer leaning against a hay fork. Other than the lion being a symbol of Britain, the symbolism escapes me. The jug is printed with many children's patterns. Two are printed under the spout, two are inside the jug, one is under the handle and one is on the bottom! There is a two inch tight hairline at the rim on one side of the jug. The rest of the jug is in excellent shape. Take a look at all of the photos to see the many patterns. The jug was probably made in Staffordshire around 1840-1860. If you are looking for an unusual piece of transferware, this is the one for you!
Circa: 1860
Manufacturer: Maker Unknown

It was made by Wood & Challinor (1828-1843) in Tunstall, Staffordshire. Other than a few glazed over (done in the making) very small chips on the back, condition is excellent. The transfer print is very crisp, which is not unusual for a black transfer. If you have been looking for a gorgeous black transferware platter, this is the one for you!

08-5199

BLACK TRANSFER INDIAN SCENERY CUP PLATE 1835 Found on a 5 inch cup plate, this pattern is part of a series that depicts wild animals in an Indian setting. Actually, the India part is quite fanciful! The animal in the center of the plate appears to be a mongoose. I have five more of these plates. Condition of this plate is excellent. I have another item in this series in the catalog; a beaver undertray. Although this plate is not marked, it is from the "Indian Scenery" series made by William Hackwood around 1835.
